Machine learning-augmented turbulence modeling for RANS simulations of massively separated flows

چکیده
We combine data assimilation and machine learning to correct the RANS Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The final neural-network contribution is a Boussinesq-correction, rather than turbulent eddy-viscosity adjustment. Flows over periodic hills at distinct Reynolds numbers geometries were selected demonstrate potential gain of learning-augmented models.

Machine Learning-augmented Predictive Modeling of Turbulent Separated Flows over Airfoils
Karthik Duraisamy Assistant Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 Abstract A modeling paradigm is developed to augment predictive models of turbulence by effectively utilizing limited data generated from physical experiments. The key components of our approach involve inverse modeling to infer the spatial distribution of model discrepancies,...
متن کاملCritical Assessment of Hybrid RANS-LES Modeling for Attached and Separated Flows
The objective of this study is to evaluate a recently proposed dynamic hybrid Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework that seeks to effectively address issues regarding RANS-to-LES transition and explicit grid dependence inherent in most current hybrid RANS-LES (HRL) models. RANSto-LES transition in the investigated dynamic HRL (DHRL) model is based ...
متن کامل2DV Nonlinear k-ε Turbulence Modeling of Stratified Flows
The commonly used linear k-ε turbulence model is shown to be incapable of accurate prediction of turbulent flows, where non-isotropy is dominant. Two examples of non-isotropic flows, which have a wide range of applications in marine waters, are saline water flow and the stratified flows due to temperature gradients. These relate to stratification and consequently, variation of density through...

متن کاملProgress in Modeling 3D Shear Flows Using RANS Equations and Advanced Turbulence Models
This article reviews recent work in the area of advanced turbulence modeling for complex three-dimensional flows of engineering interest. The term “advanced” refers herein to models that resolve the near-wall flow and account for the anisotropy of the Reynolds stresses. Representative such models, including full Reynolds-stress transport and non-linear, two-equation models, that have already be...
